I have been a super fan of the format since 2008; trailing around my iPad with some giant headphones attached on the way to many, many jobs across London. They have kept company during many sleepless nights, in heavy traffic on the A406 and M11(the glamour!) and continue to be a fantastic resource for my business; whenever I want to learn and absorb newinformation and audio is the most accessible format in this season.
Firstly as a listener. I am always looking for support, encouragement, information, community, advice, knowledge etc. Podcasts have often been my introduction to someone; someone I may not have been aware of otherwise. This has led to the next steps; joining a mailing list, following on social media, searching out more episodes/their work, buying their book, recommending the episode to a friend, joining their course or investing in working together 1:1. In terms of you as an expert; being on a podcast is much more time effective - dedicating 60 minutes of your time vs sitting on dozens of discovery calls hoping to convert. Plus the recording is evergreen so can be repurposed.
Showing and sharing who you are; on a deeper level. You can invite the listener behind the scenes; you can share your back story, your mission, and why you do what you do. Your personality will have the capacity to shine through; you are not limited to a 3 minute video. In this climate clients/customers are far more discerning about who they work with and be considered before they spend their money. Podcasts are the ultimate 'know, like and trust' opportunity.
From my own experience as guest, I have felt the acceleration of my business after an episode and it brings ease to my business. The audience don't need any persuading; they are happy to enter your world voluntarily. The email trails of 'I am interested in working with you' are short and the process feels fast tracked - you don't need to convince or overly sell, you attract clients who are ready and aligned.
In 2018, I launched my podcast (that regularly featured in the top 100 business podcasts), interviewing over 200 guests and creating over 1000 episodes. Most of these guests work alone (mainly) like me, so it was incredible to build a powerful and supportive network to share ideas, connections and insight with. We were able to make introductions for one another, shortcut a process, provide an answer to something they are struggling with and create a robust support system to lean on in the good and the bad times. Sitting in someone's hot seat is an incredible way to get to know someone on a deeper level and travel through the maze of business together.
You need to be ready for the opportunity. You need to be prepared to deliver value. You want the host to maintain their audience and engagement - as often these days, there are brands attached who study the stats and act (and pay) accordingly.
Great conversations may accidentally happen on a night out; however if you want to create them in a business setting, they need some thought and consideration.
Ready to play the game
I think a new focus in your personal brand needs a big why - it will really help you on the days when motivation has dwindled or you need a little boost to help you reconnect with your mission. You have the opportunity to contribute a new perspective to the wider conversation; so I want to help you to be purposeful and in full alignment.
The pitch Podcast hosts always need guests. But the work starts with you; they need you to be clear and ready. Knowing how to pitch to welcome a response and a speedy booking is a process you can crack. I want to show you how you can highlight what an excellent addition you would be; whilst feeling in integrity and without the 'ick, I am selling myself' factor.
The prep How can you set yourself and the host up for success. As the guest, it is about you AND it isn't, it is about the audience. So preparing to serve them is hugely important. Even though your nerves may be humming in the background, I want to help you to not allow them to be the driver of the conversation. I share with you a prep process; that will remain a steady companion; so not matter the situation, you will be ready to deliver and share your 'best self'.
The interview I don't want the opportunity to pass you by. I know I sound a little like a pageant Mom but I want you to thrive. I want the audience to see your greatness and brilliance. For you to answer with witty anecdotes, powerful stories and compelling, thought provoking ideas. But please don't worry, you don't have to wish or hope for inspiration on the day; you can prepare in advance. Not to the point where you just regurgitate the same, old rehearsed response that your audience who know you can mouth along with. But instead, you create a lively picnic of thoughts, ideas, stories and examples that you can pic 'n' mix from, whilst staying present and connected with the host.
It's live When the podcast goes live, I want to show you how to optimise the moment in the short term and the long term. From how to encourage the reach of the podcast so it lands in the laps of your ideal clients but also how to use what you have created so you can create more with ease, flow, connection and simplicity. Before you know it, others will be reaching out to you.
