Interview with Maxine Kerley | Digital Bons Bons

Name: Maxine Kerley

What do you do? How would you describe your working life?

I currently work in corporate marketing during the week and then I run my own business called Digital Bon Bons, which launched in Dec 2016.
Busy – I describe it as busy but I love it. When I returned to work after Maternity Leave I was very lucky to be able to work in a flexible pattern that allowed me to have Fridays with my little girl still. I enjoyed my work life balance in the corporate world because of this. I have always had aspirations to start my own business however, so last year when I started thinking about it more and more and I took the leap on that as well.

Did you show any early signs as a child that indicated that you would end up where you are today?

I don’t know. I’m sure if you asked my family in a Piers Morgan Life Stories type fashion they could probably pick up on things. I’ve always been determined and hard working. If I really want to aim for something I will do my upmost to get there. I remember my old primary school teacher really changing my life. He had so much faith and belief in me, the potential I had that he really did change my life. The secondary school I went to was all thanks to him and him believing I was good enough when we hadn’t even considered it as an option open to us. The friends I have, the path I took I do attribute a lot to him and his faith in me.

Describe your morning routine

The alarm goes off at 6.10am. I head downstairs to have a quick cup of tea and breakfast. I turn my phone on to reply to my Grandad who texts me every morning while he is at work, check my business emails and social accounts. Then at 6.45am I head upstairs to get washed and ready for my day at work while getting little one ready for Pre-School while the Hubby gets ready for work ready for him to take her or he is getting her ready while I am so that I can drop her off at my Nan's. I’m out the door by 7.15am latest.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from and when do they arrive?

Literally everywhere. I studied Art and Theatre growing up so I’ve always been a visual and expressive person so I really do find inspiration hitting me all the time – while I take a walk, watch something, read something or even do a little sketch myself.

When motivation wavers, how do you get back on track?

I talk to my nearest and dearest. I remember when launching the business I had a lot of help from a friend of mine who had done it, she’s always been a great support and any time I am feeling a bit overwhelmed she is there to pick me up. My husband is also great for a cuddle and keeping me back on track.

What is the best thing about your job/lifestyle?

At the moment the fact that I am doing something I am so passionate about. I love Digital Marketing so having found my niche and wanting to work with parent business owners who target their businesses towards fellow parents and little ones is a dream come true – sounds so corny doesn’t it? But it’s really true. Since launching the business I have met so many amazing people so far and am working with fantastic businesses, helping them navigate this digital world we live in and achieve their business goals. As I said I am a creative individual so creating a website for a client and then watching that grow is just an amazing feeling and being able to help someone get their business out there is incredible. It’s what it’s all about – helping people.

My lifestyle at the moment is pretty busy but at the moment I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you could do something else for the day- what would you do?

I’ve always wanted to be a Disney animator so that would be pretty amazing. Or to make film trailers for the day – I’m a huge film fan.

How do you overcome any challenges in your working life?

By taking five and accessing what’s going on. Challenges are part and parcel of life so facing them in working life is no different. I just sit back, take stock, talk it through even if that’s to myself out loud sometimes if no one is around and face them. It all helps with growth and development. Got to take the rough with the smooth.

How do you celebrate your successes?

Firstly having a little clap to myself – how sad, I know. But it’s a nice little feeling. Then I generally get a nice big hug of my husband and daughter (who doesn’t know what’s going on with this, but she likes to join in) and then maybe having a little treat like a nice indian takeaway or a dinner out.

Do you have any tools/resources or rituals that you couldn’t live without?

So many. My notebook, my laptop, Google, Photoshop, Canva, Pinterest, the Facebook groups I’m part of, the Instagram community, networking and meeting people in real life.

Which books from your bookcase would you recommend?

Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso

How to style your brand by Fiona Humberstone

The Positivity Kit by Lisa Currie

What are your daily essentials to make you feel ready?

My Note Book – I’ve recently started Bullet Journalling which I’m getting to grips with but also I’m finding other ways of doing it. Pinterest has been fab for finding inspiration on that.

A good cup of tea – you can’t beat it for when you sit down at the PC, take a breath and dive in

My PC or my Surface Pro – being digital I need the tech.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

“Dear Maxine, this is your future self calling. I know you find it hard to have belief in yourself, you struggle with feeling confident with what you can do, but please don’t lovely, please listen to me. You’ll spend years thinking you’re not good enough but you are. I know you’re at an age where you don’t want to hear that because you don’t believe it. Nan and Grandad tell you it enough, but trust me. You can and will achieve great things, you will be okay. Trust yourself, believe in yourself. You can follow your dreams.”

Where would you like to be in 5 years time?

Working for myself full time and looking at my own office space- that would be amazing.
